Description:

California as an island with nearly flat northern coast, much like Goos type. Straet Anian and Anian to far north. Partial coastline of Zelandia Nova to far southwest. L.C. 507,508,3078; Wagner 378; Tooley 29 (Plate 41); Leighly 33 & 56 (Plate XI). Dedicated to D. Cornelio Witsen, whose arms are shown on a shield supported by angels (upper left). Title is on a stone block with two snakes above and figures of natives on either side. A chief is under an umbrella to right of title. (lower left). Map was copied many times. Issued in: Novus atlas absolutissimus , Vol. VI/ J. Jansson, 1658 (actual date is in question). Issued in: De nieuwe en onbekende weereld / Montanus, 1671. Copy in Dutch edition is by Gerard Schagen. Copy in German edition is by Jacob Meursius, but it has different title piece and vignette. John Ogilby's book, America, 1671, has similar map. Issued in: Atlas minor sive geographia compendiosa, qua orbis terrarum, per paucas attamen novissimas tabulas ostenditur / Amstelædami, N. Visscher, [1690?]. per N. Visscher.
