- drawn & engraved by J. M. Atwood. Relief shown by hachures. Latitudinal and longitudinal lines. Prime meridian: Washington. Coordinates are approximate and based on Greenwich meridian. Bar scale on map given in "Miles." Table of distances (several routes from New York to San Francisco, and locations in between). Shows topography, waterways, shoals, routes (e.g. Oregon route -- Caravan route to Santa Fe). Features Native American territories. Includes: Treaty boundary Russia & Gt. Britain 1825. Collector's note: Land routes colored in red ink. The United States portion of this map was used in 1849 (W-GR 70). There are substantial additions in the inset and additions and changes on the main map. There is no copyright notice. The spacing of fold lines suggests that the map came out of a book. Inset map: Map of the Gold Region. California. Pictorial vignette: Pyramid Lake, Upper California. Discovered by Capt. Fremnot 1844. 35 miles long, 4890 feet above the sea. The Pyramid of Rock in the Lake rises 600 ft. above its surface.
