compiled from the U.S. land & coast surveys, the several military, scientific & rail road explorations, the state & county boundary surveys made under the order of the Surveyor General of California, & from private surveys by George H. Goddard, C. E. Relief shown by hachures and spot heights. Latitudinal and longitudinal lines. Coordinates approximate and based on Greenwich meridian. Bar scale on map in "statute miles." Includes legend above title. Shows topography, drainage, county boundaries, cities and towns, ranchos, "bars & other mining places," roads and trails. Covers also "Utah Territory", including Nevada. Lake Tahoe called "Bigler L." Descriptive text throughout. "Entered according to Act of Congress the Year 1858 by Britton & Rey in the Clerks Office of the District Court of the Northern District of the State of California." Collector's note: This is both reduced and revised from the 1857 map. Anaheim now appears in southern California. In northern California settlements along the Susan river are shown; there is a new delination of Honey Lake and a westward placement of several lakes along the California - Nevada border. There is later edition of this map which I have that was issued in a pamphlet; and the map was used, with the deletion of Goddard's name, as an illustration for several books and pamplets ( see, George, Henry; Hittel, John S.; Immigration Association of California).It was also used as the base for the "Viticulture Map of the State of California," issued by the Committee on Phylloxera, etc, 1880.
