Qvarta Africae Tabvla
- Alternative Title:
- Quarta Africae Tabula
- Description:
- Petrus de Turre puchased Conrad Sweynheyms plates in 1490 to reissue the maps based on Claudius Ptolemy notes. Ptolemaic Africa, with no suggestion of the Cape of Good Hope, and the Nile finishing in the 'Mountains of the Moon'. Published in the second edition of Angelus & Caldarini's version of Ptolemy, first published 1478, and indistinguishable from the first edition. An unusual feature of the series is the lettering, which is not engraved with a burin but stamped onto the plate. Coordinates approximate and based on Greenwich meridian. Possibly an incunabulum? Joined at the centre, as issued/as usual with this edition. http://alteagallery.com/stock_detail.php?ref=3968&search=
