Abstract
This line dataset represents railroads in and near Mongolia in 1950. The dataset was developed as part of the Mongolian 20th-century Historical GIS Database project. It is designed to integrate and align well with other datasets created as part of the project. It can be used for creating small to medium size maps of historical Mongolia and for analysis, as appropriate to the resolution. This data is only as accurate as the source maps upon which it is based. As such, the UC Berkeley Library does not guarantee the accuracy of the data. Researchers should use their own judgement about appropriate uses for this data. Users should please acknowledge and cite the “Mongolian 20th-century Historical GIS Database project” in any derivative works. The source map for this dataset is: "Soviet Union, Glavnoe upravlenie geodezii i kartografii. Китай (China) [map]. Scale 1:5,000,000. Moscow: Glavnoe upravlenie geodezii i kartografii pri Sovete Ministrov SSSR, 1950."

Supplemental Information
The Mongolian 20th-century Historical GIS Database project was initiated by Susan Powell in 2017 with support from the UC Berkeley Library, the American Center for Mongolian Studies, the Association of Asian Studies, and the Librarians Association of the University of California. The project’s initial scope includes boundaries, places, infrastructure, demographics, and environmental layers.

Process Step
Description
This dataset was vectorized using heads up digitizing from a georeferenced scan. The pysical map held by UC Berkeley Library was scanned at 400 dpi on a sheet feed scanner. The georeferencing and digitizing were completed in ArcMap 10.5 desktop software.
